Getting set up
What do I need?
An iPhone or iPad with iOS 26 or later, and a Mac with macOS 15 or later. You need two apps: CarryOn on your iPhone or iPad from the App Store, and CarryOn for Mac, free from getcarryon.app.
How do I pair my iPhone or iPad with my Mac?
- On your Mac, click CarryOn in the menu bar, then Pair New Device. Your Mac shows a code.
- On your iPhone or iPad, open CarryOn and scan the code.
- Check that the short code on both screens is the same, and you're in.
A pairing code works once, for two minutes. Pairing needs both devices in front of you, so no one can pair from afar.
Why does the Mac app need Screen Recording and Accessibility?
Screen Recording lets your iPhone or iPad see your Mac's screen and hear its sound. Accessibility lets your touches and keys move the pointer and type. CarryOn's menu on your Mac shows a checklist that ticks itself as you allow each one. If macOS asks you to quit and reopen CarryOn, do that and the checklist carries on.
Do I need Tailscale?
No. CarryOn reaches your Mac on the same Wi-Fi, and from anywhere else over the internet, with nothing to set up. If you already use Tailscale, CarryOn can use it as one more way to reach your Mac.
Using CarryOn
My Mac can't be reached from away
- Make sure your Mac is on and awake. In CarryOn's menu on your Mac, turn on Keep Mac Awake, and Start at Login so CarryOn is always running.
- Make sure your Mac is connected to the internet.
- On your iPhone or iPad, CarryOn shows which way it's trying to connect. If it keeps failing, write to us with what it says.
Can someone at home see what I'm doing?
Turn on the Privacy Curtain, and your Mac's own screen goes dark while you work on it from your iPhone or iPad.
I lost a device, or gave it away
On your Mac, open CarryOn's menu and revoke that device. Its keys are deleted and it can't reach your Mac again until it's paired in person.
How do I update CarryOn for Mac?
Download the latest version from getcarryon.app and drag it into Applications, replacing the old one. Your pairings and settings stay.
Where does my voice go when I dictate?
While the mic is on, the sound goes through our server to Google's Gemini so it can be written out, and the text is typed on your Mac. We don't keep the audio or the words. The privacy policy lists exactly what goes where.
Still stuck?
Write to [email protected]. Tell us which iPhone or iPad and which Mac you use, their system versions, and what you were doing when it went wrong. A screenshot helps.
